PROGRAMME: Newly built shopping mall
LOCATION: Lithograaf 1, 6921 VA  Duiven - NL
CLIENT: Tuincentrum Duiven BV
GFA: 36.000 m²
PERIOD: 2003 - 2006
CATEGORY: Shopping

Since March 2006, a large shopping mall of 36.000 m² lies a few hundred metres west of the A12 exit at Duiven, offering various shops for home and garden under one roof. The site lies in a supra-regional area with a retail function, comprising shops such as IKEA, Praxis, Leen Bakker, Makro, Kwantum and Piet Klerkx.

The initiator of this project was the garden centre Intratuin Duiven, which had been located along the Rijksweg since 1984. In cooperation with the municipality of Duiven it had to move to another location, to make room for planned housing. Drivers coming off the A12 will now see a large, black cube from the roundabout towards Duiven and Westervoort. The cube has been given an open façade of glass, offering a view straight into Intratuin.

Once you arrive on the site itself, the joint transparent entrance passage offers access to Intratuin, the DIY store, the kitchen centre and the home outlet store. The passage includes a café-kiosk, a flower shop, seating, olive trees and various shows, and is an experience in itself. It divides the estate into the more greenhouse character of Intratuin and the more utilitarian volumes of the other shops.

The façade is made up of a two metre high plinth of sustainable, black ClickBrick bricks and above that wooden slat cladding, a natural material connecting well with the green lush world inside the garden centre building.
